Overview
The flange training under DIN EN 1591-4:2013-12 combines classroom teaching, practical exercises and the assessment of competence. The offering ranges from the basic qualification level through to hydraulic tightening methods, heat exchangers, compact and high-pressure flanges, small-bore pipe unions and the qualification of responsible persons.
Qualification under DIN EN 1591-4
DIN EN 1591-4 deals with the qualification of persons who dismantle, assemble or tighten bolted joints in pressurised systems in critical service. It also applies to responsible persons who plan and supervise this work.
In our courses you learn to make bolted joints properly in accordance with documented work instructions. Theory, practical exercises and an assessment of competence are combined. The aim is a joint that stays leak-tight throughout its intended service life.
For its scope of application, VDI 2290:2025-11 specifies the requirements for the qualification record of the assembly personnel, quality control and the assembly instructions.
Modular competence levels
DIN EN 1591-4 describes a modular route to the qualification of persons who dismantle, assemble or tighten bolted joints in pressurised systems in critical service. The aim is a joint that stays leak-tight throughout its intended service life. The basic qualification under Table 1 is the prerequisite for the further competence levels offered.
The course is matched to the type of joint, the tool and the documented work instruction. Table 9 is used for high-pressure flanges and special joints, for example BASF high-pressure flanges or agreed ANSI/ASME joints. Responsible persons are trained under Table 11 for the qualification levels carried out in their area.
Certificate of competence and scope
A certificate of competence confirms general competence but is not an operational work permit. Plant-, operator- and joint-specific familiarisation and assignments may additionally be required.

How long is the certificate of competence valid?
The certificate is generally valid for five years. Interruptions to the activity, doubts about continued competence and the further conditions of the standard must be taken into account.
Does the certificate replace an operational work permit?
No. The certificate of competence confirms general competence. Operational assignment, a work permit and additional plant- or operator-specific knowledge remain required.
