Overview
In this course you learn to select slinging gear and load-lifting attachments properly, to check them before use and to deploy them safely. You recognise typical hazards, communicate clearly with the operator of the lifting gear and respond correctly to defects or faults.
Under Section 12 of the Occupational Safety and Health Act (Arbeitsschutzgesetz), Section 12 of the German Industrial Safety Ordinance (Betriebssicherheitsverordnung) and Section 4 of DGUV Regulation 1 (DGUV = the German Social Accident Insurance institutions and their regulations), instruction must take place before the activity begins and thereafter at least once a year. It is to be carried out in relation to the task and documented.
Duties of the slinger
The course qualifies employees for safely slinging, guiding and setting down loads. It covers the selection, marking, load capacity and inspection of slinging gear as well as clear communication with the operator of the lifting gear. Practical exercises transfer the fundamentals to operational loads.
Slingers must assess the load, centre of gravity, method of slinging, angle of inclination and load capacity together. They check slinging gear and load-lifting attachments before use, recognise the discard condition and keep people out of the hazard area. The basic training is complemented by task- and operation-specific instruction at least annually.
Who should attend
Employees who sling loads or operate lifting gear as part of their operational work.
Basic training and annual instruction
Basic training: No particular prior knowledge is required. Suitable lifting gear, loads and slinging gear must be available for the practical training. Outcome: an ADLER Academy training record. Duration: 6 lesson hours.
Annual instruction: Participants have already completed basic training and carry out corresponding activities. Outcome: an ADLER Academy refresher and instruction record. Duration: 3 lesson hours.
The lesson formats stated are ADLER course formats. Work equipment, slinging gear, prior knowledge, the number of participants and the practice required determine the binding scope.

Frequently asked questions
How often must slingers be instructed?
Before the activity begins and thereafter regularly, at least once a year. The instruction must match the task, the work equipment and the operational hazards.
What is practised?
Practice includes, among other things, the selection and inspection of slinging gear, determining the load centre of gravity, suitable methods of slinging, safely guiding the load and hand signals.
Does the course replace operational instruction?
No. Operational loads, lifting gear, work processes and hazards must additionally be taken into account.
