ISO 45001 — occupational health and safety management

ADLER CertConsulting supports the build-up and further development of an occupational health and safety management system to ISO 45001:2018, including Amendment 1:2024.

Overview

ISO 45001 advisory connects the existing occupational safety organisation with a systematic management approach. ADLER CertConsulting reviews responsibilities, risk assessments, participation, objectives, actions and records and, together with the company, develops a robust structure from these. The advisory replaces neither employer duties nor specialist functions. The certification audit and the decision rest with an independent certification body.

ISO 45001 in the company

ISO 45001 treats occupational health and safety as a leadership and organisational task. The company must determine its context, hazards, legal and other requirements, and the risks and opportunities of the management system. Managers carry responsibility; employees and their representatives are consulted and involved.

ADLER CertConsulting’s approach

ADLER CertConsulting starts from the existing occupational safety arrangements. Risk assessments, briefings, operating instructions, inspections, incidents, walkdowns and actions are not treated as separate folders but brought into a common management approach. Gaps are prioritised and assigned to those responsible.

Scope boundaries and effectiveness

The management system complements the statutory occupational safety organisation but does not replace it. The tasks of the employer, managers, the occupational safety specialist (Fachkraft für Arbeitssicherheit), the company doctor, the employee representation and employees must remain clarified in relation to the specific operation. Effectiveness is assessed through key figures, incident analyses, internal audits and the management review.

Current basis

The current basis is ISO 45001:2018 with Amendment 1:2024. The amendment adds the consideration of climate change in the context of the organisation and for relevant requirements of interested parties. A revision of the standard is under way; drafts are not presented as a valid certification requirement.

Frequently asked questions

Does ISO 45001 replace statutory occupational safety?

No. The management system helps to address legal and other requirements systematically. The employer’s statutory duties and the tasks of the required specialists remain in place.

Which edition is current?

The current basis is ISO 45001:2018 together with Amendment 1:2024. A revision is under way, but there is not yet a published new basis for certification.

Must employees be involved?

Yes. ISO 45001 places particular emphasis on the consultation and participation of employees. How this is implemented depends on the organisation, its activities and the existing representation structures.

Can ISO 45001 be combined with other management systems?

Yes. Thanks to the common high-level structure, ISO 45001 can be combined well with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. Shared processes may cover, for example, document control, audits, actions and the management review.
