Data-centre projects change their risk profile quickly. While fit-out is still under way, testing, energisation and first operation-like activities often begin. Construction, MEP, commissioning and operator processes therefore have to be connected cleanly.

Data-centre construction: multiple trades and transitions

Data centres combine the risks of a large construction site with high technical density and early transitions into testing or operation-like states. During shell and building envelope, different hazards come to the fore than during parallel MEP installation. With energisation, pressurisation, functional tests and integrated systems testing, new interfaces arise between construction, commissioning and operation.

ADLER places this development into project phases, risk registers and permit processes. RAMS and permit to work are aligned with simultaneous activities, electrical and mechanical isolations, hot work, lifting operations and other particular risks. Transparency and continuous KPI reporting

Data-centre projects need a consistent HSEE picture, because workforce numbers, work scopes, plant conditions and risk focus areas change continuously. ADLER supports a reporting structure that brings together operational information from site management, inspections, PTW, onboarding, observations, events and action management.

The agreed reporting cycle can combine daily operational overviews, regular project reports and management reviews. Leading indicators show, for example, the status of preventive activities and critical processes. Lagging indicators add events that have occurred and their consequences. Definitions, reference bases, data quality and responsibilities are documented transparently.

The aim is not isolated indicator production. Deviations, trends and overdue actions should become visible, so that the client, project management and executing companies can take decisions in a traceable way and follow their implementation.

Data protection and data security

HSEE transparency must not come at the expense of data protection. Onboarding, access, attendance, observation, event and reporting data are therefore processed for a defined purpose and limited to the necessary extent. Roles, authorisations, recipients, retention periods, deletion and risk-appropriate technical and organisational measures are included in project and system planning.

ADLER involves its data protection officer early in data-protection-relevant HSEE processes. At the same time, the roles of client, main contractor, executing companies and system providers are clarified for the specific processing operation. The data protection officer supports and monitors; responsibility remains with the respective designated controllers and processors.
