RAMS, PTW, LMRA and hazardous energies working together

RAMS plan the safe way of working, PTW controls defined permits, LMRA checks the situation directly on site, and energy isolation controls hazardous energy sources.

RAMS

Risk assessment method statements (RAMS): assess hazards, describe the work sequence, and define protective measures, qualifications and emergency provisions.

Permit to work (PTW)

For defined activities, check whether the preconditions, interfaces and permits are met for a limited scope and period.

LMRA

A last-minute risk assessment (LMRA): directly before starting, or after changes, compare whether the plan and the real situation still match.

Energy isolation and hazardous energies

Identify energy sources, isolate and mark them, control stored energy, verify the safe state and return to operation in a controlled way.

A permit alone does not make an activity safe. The responsibility of the employers involved and of the technically responsible persons remains in place. LOTO is a common term for lockout/tagout procedures, but it is not a separate statutory rule in German law.

From document to controlled execution

When is an LMRA repeated?
